Introduction & Background

Bhutan (/buːˈtɑːn/ⓘ; Template:Lang-dz Template:IPA-dz), officially the Kingdom of Bhutan,a is a landlocked country in South Asia. It is situated in the Eastern Himalayas, between China in the north and India in the south. A mountainous country, Bhutan is known as "Druk Yul," or "Land of the Thunder Dragon". Nepal and Bangladesh are located near Bhutan but do not share a land border. The country has a population of over 727,14515 and territory of 38,394 square kilometres (14,824mi2) and ranks 133rd in terms of land area and 160th in population. Bhutan is a constitutional democratic monarchy with King as head of state and Prime Minister as head of government. Mahayana and Vajrayana Buddhism is the state religion and the Je Khenpo is the head of state religion.

The subalpine Himalayan mountains in the north rise from the country's lush subtropical plains in the south.16 In the Bhutanese Himalayas, there are peaks higher than 7,000 metres (23,000ft) above sea level. Gangkhar Puensum is Bhutan's highest peak and is the highest unclimbed mountain in the world. The wildlife of Bhutan is notable for its diversity,17 including the Himalayan takin. The capital and largest city is Thimphu.

Macroeconomic Overview
The economy of Bhutan is based on agriculture and forestry, which provide the main livelihood for more than 60% of the population. Agriculture consists largely of subsistence farming and animal husbandry. Rugged mountains dominate the terrain and make the building of roads and other infrastructure difficult. Bhutan is among the richest by gross domestic product (nominal) per capita in South Asia, at $3,491 as of 2022, but it still places 153rd, and among the poorest in the world. The total gross domestic product is only $2.898 billion, placing Bhutan at 178th according to the IMF.
