Introduction & Background

Anguilla (/æŋˈɡwɪlə/ ang-GWIL-ə) is a British Overseas Territory in the Caribbean.6 It is one of the most northerly of the Leeward Islands in the Lesser Antilles, lying east of Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands and directly north of Saint Martin.7 The territory consists of the main island of Anguilla, approximately 16 miles (26 kilometres) long by 3 miles (5km) wide at its widest point, together with a number of much smaller islands and cays with no permanent population. The territory's capital is The Valley.8 The total land area of the territory is 35 square miles (91km2),9 with a population of approximately 15,75323 (2021).

In reference to the island's shape, the Italian anguilla, meaning "eel" (in turn, from the Latin diminutive of anguis, "snake") was used as its name. 8101112

Macroeconomic Overview
The economy of Anguilla depends heavily on luxury tourism, offshore banking, lobster fishing, and remittances from emigrants. Due to its small size, few natural resources, and reliance on tourism and foreign direct investment, Anguilla is vulnerable to external economic conditions in the United States, Canada and Europe. Therefore, economic growth in Anguilla can be very volatile. Anguilla's currency is the East Caribbean dollar, though the US dollar is also widely accepted. The exchange rate is fixed to the US dollar at US$1 = EC$2.70.
